During the mid-to-late '90s, EOSS developed a proto-breakcore variant of jungle called “wreckstep” which features prominently on this album. Dub, hip-hop, jungle, ambient, and experimental electronic influences are all evident as the pieces merge into a unique sound that goes to eclectic and strange places. Originally released on Mashit's predecessor label Bliss Recordings in 2000, the Roots Wreck Remix full-length album combines the Roots and Wroller Wreck 12-inch vinyl EPs which EOSS produced in 2000 and 1998 respectively.
In honor of the 22nd anniversary of Electro Organic Sound System's classic Roots Wreck Remix album, we re-released it here for the first time on Bandcamp along with this ultra-limited edition, hand-bound, numbered and signed, double 12-inch vinyl in an edition of 5 which is now sold out, but we do still have some copies of the Roots EP 12-inch. Check our Bandcamp for availability.
The music has been described as:
“Ground-breaking musical experimentation.” - The Boston Globe
“Fibrous Jungle and post-Orb dub overlayed with grainy electronics.” - The Wire Magazine (UK)
“A compilation of muddy, lo-fi tracks that builds from dub-oriented grooves to frenetic jungle beats at the most unexpected moments. … The album is conceptually smart … with several instances of samples drawn from Trussell's live drum and guitar playing. … each track packs a terrific energy and tests genre boundaries. Some of these efforts are re-mixed in the final section by Tube and Hrvatski [Keith Fullerton Whitman], the former has recorded with Liquid Sky Music … while Hrvatski is currently working on remixes for Mouse on Mars. … the sound of it is remarkable.” - Exclaim! (Canada)
“Delightfully hard grinding album, textured with ambient and atmospheric sounds, escapes all genres by pulling pieces from every corner of the underground music scene.” - Deeper Magazine
“Killer mashup of far-out samples, dub reggae, techstep and/or d&b. If the Orb retired, adopted a son & decided to update his software, perhaps we could make out the shape of this release somewhere in that ganja cloud. Truly excellent creations.” - History of the Future
One 12-inch is the Roots EP which was originally released on Mashit's predecessor label, Bliss Recordings in 2000, and the other is the Wroller Wreck EP, also release on Bliss in 1998. The music on the two EPs contain all of the tracks that eventually became the Roots Wreck Remix album (with the exception of the Percussive Waves remix by Tube (RIP) which is exclusive to the digital album.
